My songs are character vignettes; a brief glimpse into the life of the narrator, maybe at an important turning point, or maybe in the midst of the mundane of their every day routine. I want the same freedom in my songwriting that a novelist has in their novel. The difference with song is that I inhabit that character through performance, like playwright and actor in tandem. People are messy, and I have no interest in creating caricatures within my songs. What I’m doing is an exercise in sympathy.
